Practical experience
CA Students gain their practical experience by working in an approved CATO which may be in CA firms, or in the corporate or public sectors - Each CATO has a CA Training Program specifically developed for their CA Student(s)
- Each CA Training Program is approved by the Provincial Institute/Ordre, which requires the CATO to meet the profession’s rigorous requirements
- CA Students seeking to practise public accounting need to follow a specific career path
- All CA Students who begin their work experience on or after September 1, 2009 and all CA students employed in the corporate and government sectors are part of the Practical Experience Requirements (PER). These CA Students are required to maintain a personal Record of CA Qualifying Experience (RQE), updated semi-annually to chart their progress. The details are explained in the Student Booklet.
- A 2010 edition of the CA Practical Experience Requirements (PER) is now available, which includes clarified descriptions of the specific competencies. These changes require updates to the Record of CA Qualifying Experience (RQE). Most CATOs are requiring their CA students completing the RQE before September 1, 2010 to transition to the new version. Please check with your employer to understand which version you are required to complete.
- Details on the changes from the 2009 edition of the PER are summarized in a fact sheet and are highlighted in the Appendix 3 of the PER 2010. Additional FAQs have also been provided to address transitional provisions and interpretations around the new specific competencies.
- CA Students employed by CA firms* before September 1, 2009 can continue their practical experience under the requirements in effect when they registered. However, these students and their employers also have the option of adopting the new process.
- To learn more about the program, a Student Booklet is available for easy reference
- CA Students must keep copies of all RQEs throughout their term of practical experience and for at least one year after becoming a CA
